In the blink of an eye, I have been involved in our condominium’s management committee for three consecutive years.

In 2023, we reduced the number of committee members from nine to seven, which means that we only need four votes in favor (a majority) to pass proposals, significantly shortening the waiting time for committee responses.

As someone who values freedom and dislikes excessive interference in others’ lives, why did I join the condominium’s management committee?

Three years ago (in 2020), some members of the previous management committee were always causing trouble for residents on the upper floors. One day, our neighbor Winson approached my spouse and me, hoping that we could represent the fifth-floor residents in discussions with the condominium management. After understanding the situation, my spouse and I decided to run for the management committee together, aiming to contribute something to the condominium.

Serving as a management committee member is entirely voluntary. In the first year, I knew nothing about condominium affairs and didn’t know where to start. I learned while contributing based on my experience. Although I could offer my time and some expertise, I wasn’t particularly interested in managing the condominium’s day-to-day matters. I often thought about quitting, but the issues within the condominium kept arising. Our committee decided to change the management company at a critical moment. Typically, young homeowners are busy with their careers and families, leaving little time for involvement. Seeing my spouse and a few dedicated committee members struggling for help, I couldn’t bear to leave them hanging and reluctantly stayed on.

Over the past three years, I’ve realized that the work of a management committee member goes beyond trivial tasks; it involves the entire community’s interests. Handling problems has taught me the importance of teamwork. Although I initially joined to advocate for neighbors, I gradually discovered that through active participation in condominium management, I could genuinely impact community development and residents’ quality of life.

Despite once finding this responsibility uninteresting, my abilities and insights have grown over time. Today, I’m still a “neighborhood auntie,” having made connections with more outstanding neighbors and contributed within my capabilities to the condominium.

For the next term, I’ve decided not to continue serving. After all, managing the condominium’s minutiae requires significant passion and patience—qualities I may no longer possess! 😊
